Can I charge an EV from a standard powerpoint?
Whether a regular 10A or 15A powerpoint is suitable for EV charging in Australia, and why a dedicated circuit is the better long-term answer.

Most EVs come with a portable 'granny cable' that plugs into an ordinary powerpoint. It works — but it's slow, and not something we recommend as a permanent solution.
Yes, technically — with caveats
A standard 10A general purpose outlet (GPO) can run an EV's portable charge cable, typically drawing around 1.8kW to 2.4kW. That adds roughly 10–15km of range per hour, depending on the vehicle.
The outlet, its wiring and its circuit protection all need to be in good condition, and the circuit shouldn't be shared with other high-draw appliances during a multi-hour charge.
Why we don't recommend it long term
EV charging is a sustained load for several hours — a very different duty cycle to a kettle or toaster. Older wiring, loose connections or a powerpoint not designed for continuous full-rated load can overheat.
- Much slower than a dedicated 7kW charger
- Higher risk on old or worn wiring and outlets
- No RCD-specific protection unless the circuit already has one
- No scheduling, app control or solar integration
The better long-term option
A dedicated EV circuit with its own protection device, sized cable and a proper charger gives faster charging and a circuit built for the load — usually installed in a morning.

It depends on battery size, but expect well over 24 hours for a full charge on most current EVs — fine for occasional top-ups, not for daily use.
Is it illegal to charge from a powerpoint in Australia?

Should I get an extension lead instead of a dedicated charger?
No — extension leads are not designed for hours of continuous high current and increase fire risk. Use the vehicle's own cable directly into a checked outlet, or better, install a dedicated charger.
