Single phase vs three phase EV charging
The practical difference between single phase and three phase home EV charging, and how to know which supply you have.

Phase supply is one of the biggest factors in how fast your car can charge at home. Here's what it means in plain terms, and how it affects your options.
What single and three phase mean
Most Australian houses have a single phase electricity supply. Three phase splits the incoming supply into three separate active wires, allowing much higher total power to be delivered to one property.
On a single phase supply, home AC charging tops out at 7.4kW. On three phase, it can go up to 22kW — but only if your car's onboard charger can actually use that much power.
How to check which you have
Look at your main switchboard: three phase supplies typically have three main switches (often labelled or grouped together) rather than one, and the meter or supply cable will usually show three active conductors.
If you're not sure, an electrician can confirm this from photos or an inspection before quoting your install.
Does three phase actually charge faster for your car?
Only if your vehicle's onboard AC charger is rated above 7.4kW. Many EVs sold in Australia have an 11kW onboard charger; some go up to 22kW. Check your specific model — installing a 22kW charger doesn't help if your car can only accept 7kW.
Can I upgrade to three phase?
Sometimes — it depends on what's available from your local network and the cost of bringing three phase to the property, which varies significantly by location and existing infrastructure. It's a conversation worth having with your electrician and network provider if you specifically need the extra capacity.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 22kW charger damage my car if it only accepts 7kW?
No — the vehicle negotiates its own charging rate with the charger and will only draw what it can safely accept.
Is three phase worth it for a single EV household?
It depends on your daily driving distance, charging window and whether a second EV is likely. Many single-EV households are well served by single phase 7kW charging overnight.
