Dynamic load management for home EV chargers

How dynamic load management lets a home EV charger avoid tripping the main switch, often without an expensive supply upgrade.

Adding a high-power EV charger to a home that's already using most of its available capacity used to mean a costly supply upgrade. Dynamic load management is often a cheaper way to solve the same problem.

The problem it solves

Every home has a main switch rating — the maximum current the supply can safely provide. Air conditioning, ovens, hot water and an EV charger running at the same time can add up to more than that limit, tripping the main switch.

How it works

A current transformer (CT clamp) on the incoming supply constantly measures total household load. The charger's management system uses that reading to automatically reduce (or increase) the charging current in real time, staying under the main switch rating.

  • Charges at full rate when the rest of the house is drawing little power (commonly overnight)
  • Automatically backs off when other appliances are running
  • Prevents nuisance trips rather than just recovering from them
  • Can share available current dynamically between two or more chargers on one supply

When it's the better option over a switchboard/supply upgrade

If your board and supply are otherwise safe and compliant, and the only issue is available current, load management is usually faster and cheaper to install than increasing your supply capacity.

If your switchboard has other issues — old fuses, missing RCD protection — that needs addressing regardless, and load management doesn't fix it.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does load management slow down my charging every night?

Usually not — most homes have the most spare capacity overnight, which is exactly when EV charging tends to happen.

  • Does every charger support load management?

Most quality chargers support it via a CT clamp or compatible meter, but not all — check compatibility before buying.
